The Breville Juice Fountain Plus is Breville’s entry-level Centrifugal juicer. It is the juicer featured in the popular documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Breville does make an even cheaper juicer, the Compact Juice Fountain, but that juicer does not feature an external pulp container. The Juice Fountain Plus does have an external pulp collector. Among its competitors in the centrifugal juice market, the Juice Fountain Plus is a very effective juicer.
The following is a comprehensive unbiased review covering all aspects of the JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus.
Nearly all the juicers in the the Breville Juice Fountain Line are identical with a few minor tweaks. The Juice Fountain Plus is an entry level 2-speed model. Later improvements include stainless steel construction and multiple speeds. The Juice Fountain Plus is also one of the most popular juicers on the market. It has over 3,000 reviews on Amazon with an average rating above 4 stars.
There is some evidence that Breville is behind the making of Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Conspiracy theories aside, there is no doubt that Breville does market its products extremely well. This is an unbiased review to examine so you can determine if there is substance behind the hype.

JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus Features
The Juice Fountain Plus has been a massive success for the Breville company. Because of this Breville went on to create improvements and tweaks as you can see from the picture on the left. The basic features that started with the Juice Fountain Plus are now included in all subsequent Juice Fountain Centrifugal models. Those include the following.
- 3″ Wide Feed Chute
- All plastic parts that come in contact with food are BPA free
- 1.1 quart Juice Jug with Froth Separator
- Easy to release power cord
- Italian made mesh filter basket with 40,00 pores
- “Low” and “high” settings (6,500 rpm & 12,000 rpm)
- Safety Locking Arm
If the meaning behind any of these terms is confusing, hopefully all your questions will be answered below. If not please post your questions in the comments.
The JE98XL Plus model is a centrifugal juicer, which means juice is separated using the centrifugal force of extremely fast spinning blades. Spinning blades shred, which releases juice. Both the juice and pulp naturally wants to fly outward from the center. The juice encounters a filter and passes through, but the pulp can not and goes over the edge into the pulp container.
Centrifugal juicers require produce to be pressed firmly against the spinning blades in order to be effective. This is done with a pusher. The pusher can not come into contact with the spinning blades which means there is a small gap where small items can escape unshredded. What this means is that the last piece of an apple will often not get shredded unless there is another item in line behind it. It also means that small items such as any leafy green or grass, will escape the blades without getting juiced. There are workarounds for this problem, which will are covered in the Juicing Performance section below.
What centrifugal juicers lack in versatility, they make up for in speed, convenience, and ease of use.
Motor & Speeds
The Juice Fountain Plus has an 850 watt 2-speed motor. The low speed operates at 6,500 RPM and the high speed operates at 12,000 RPM. The high speed is for juicing hard fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots. The low speed is for juicing soft items so that liquid doesn’t escape quickly over the sides of the juice filter.
The motor also has an overload protection sensor and and indicator light. The sensor will automatically shut off the motor if the load becomes dangerously high. This protects the motor from permanent failure. If the unit automatically shuts off, it only needs to cool down and restarted later.
Is 850 watts good? There are other centrifugal juicers on the market with only 550 watts. Of the hundreds of reviews that were reviewed to prepare this article, there was never any mention that the motor power was too weak. In fact, the Juice Fountain Plus started the reputation Breville now has of manufacturing powerful juicers. The high speed 12,000 RPM is extremely fast and juices whole apples in literally seconds.
Parts & Functionality
With the latest concerns about drinking from plastic, some people may prefer to juice directly into a glass container instead of the included juice jug. The Juice Fountain Plus has a cutaway design that allows you place your own container snugly against the base (pictured below).
Juice Jug – The included juice jug prevents splashing by having an opening that the spout fits right into. (see picture below)
See through technology – Throughout the entire juicing process it is incredibly easy to see what is going on. You can even the juice as it passes through the filter, fills up in the juice collector and empties through the spout. The clear lid of the allows you to see pulp being ejected into the pulp container. It also allows you to tell how full the pulp container is while you are juicing.
Feeding Chute – One of the most touted features is the 3″ Feed tube which significantly cuts down on the amount of chopping and prep work required.
The feed chute is classic feature in all subsequent Breville models that started with the Juice Fountain Plus. This combined feature with the fast speed of the Juice Fountain Plus makes it an incredibly convenient machine to operate.
Pulp/Waste – The centrifugal force of of the juicing action propels the pulp violently outward where it is captured in an external pulp container for easy cleanup.
Juices Continuously? – Yes. For all practical purposes the Juice Fountain Plus juices continuously. For a centrifugal juicer this is an amazing accomplishment. I have tested cheaper centrifugal juicers with external pulp containers that did not juice continuously. Most centrifugal juicers do not efficiently eject pulp so it ends up accumulating inside the juice collector (the part that surrounds the spinning blade and includes the spout). Pulp can build up very quickly. When this happens you have to stop the juicer to clean out the juice collector before you can continue. Breville has designed a juicer that does indeed eject pulp efficiently. This is quite an accomplishment that does not get talked about much.
Material & Construction
The Juice Fountain Plus is made from heavy grade polymer. Many comments have been made along the lines of, “This is plastic, but it is very hard and durable.” One reviewer did comment that if you dropped a piece it could break since everything was made from plastic.
Replacement parts for the Juice Fountain Plus are cheaper than parts for the more expensive Juice Fountain Elite. Even with the Elite, which has many stainless steel parts, it is possible to drop and dent a part causing it to no longer fit properly.
The base of the unit has suction cups to keep it from sliding during operation.
Leakage – There is more than 1 comment about the Juice Fountain Plus leaking and splattering juice everywhere. Some people seem to be very frustrated by this issue, while others have commented that they have used their model for years and never experienced any leaking.
My research shows that leaking is a preventable and fixable problem. In fact, usually leaks come from improper use of the juicer.
The most common cause of leaking is a clogged filter bowl. The mesh filter is made up of about 40,000 tiny holes. When those holes get clogged juice has no where to go and builds up very fast causing leaking. The owner’s manual has very specific instructions about how to keep the filter blown clean.
Another common cause of leaking is not fitting the lid on properly. This can happen if a plastic bag is placed in the pulp container causes the lid not to fit securely. Pulp may build up or get caught in the seal causing a bad fit.
Do not leave the metal locking arm in place when you are not using the juicer. The pressure of the locking arm can cause fatigue on the rubber casket feet preventing it from making a good seal.
It is also important to note that unlike any other Breville Juice Fountain, the top cover of the Juice Fountain Plus is NOT dishwasher safe. Washing the top cover in the dishwasher could cause it to warp resulting in a poor fit. I often wonder if the users who complaining of a leaky juicer washed the top cover in the dishwasher especially since they all say the juicer worked fine but started leaking after a couple of weeks. This clearly indicates either a clogged filter and/or a top cover that was warped after 2 weeks of washing in a dish washer.
Lastly, do not juice too fast. Give the juice time to exit the machine. It is not necessary to push down too hard on the food pusher. This creates strain on the motor, causes pulp and juice to build up too fast, and reduces juice yield.
Blade / Juicing Technology
The Juice Fountain Plus Blade/Filter Basket is all stainless steel. The “NutriDisc” filter bask is the heart of the machine. It is very important to keep it clean as described in the owner’s manual. Unlike other machines the juicing blade does not need any special tool to release.
The cord is intentionally short to prevent snagging during operation. It also wraps neatly under the machine around the legs when not in use. Unlike virtually any other appliance I have seen, the cord also features a unique quick release plug (see picture.
Without a doubt the user friendliness of the Juice Fountain Plus is one of it’s advantages. The large feed chute means that there is limited prep work and chopping required. As one of the most powerful centrifugal brands on the market, the Juice Fountain plus is extremely fast. Assembly is very straight forward. There is not much about operating the machine that would trip anyone up.
A key indicator of a juicer’s performance and efficiency is how wet or dry the pulp is after juicing. As long as the filter basket is kept clean, the Juice Fountain Plus pulp is surprisingly dry. Is the pulp 100% dry? No. You’re simply not going to get that with a centrifugal juicer.
With any centrifugal juicer sometimes the last little chuck does not get juiced because it escapes in the gap between the food pusher and juicing disc.
Of all the JE98XL videos online, this is one of the best to demonstrate the following:
- Juicing speed
- The actual juice visible through the transparent juice collector
- How efficiently the pulp is ejected. Notice that it does not appear to build up in the juice collector (the part that houses the blade and includes the spout)
The Juice Fountain Plus, like all centrifugal juicers does NOT make nut butters. If you want to make nut butters, a horizontal masticating juicer like the Omega J8006, is a good option.
Soft Fruits & Berries
The Juice Fountain Plus, like all centrifugal juicers, struggles with small berries or any small lightweight item that either escapes through the gap between the food pusher and the cutting blade. Berries do well in a blender and don’t have a lot of fiber. However, if you still want to juice them, you can sandwich them between between two larger items like cucumbers or apples, or wrap them inside lettuce to juice in a bunch.
Wheat grass is another item that does not perform well in any centrifugal juicer. If you want to drink pure wheat grass and juice wheat grass by itself, then the Juice Fountain Plus is not a good option. If however you are ok with combining wheat grass with other produce it is possible to juice wheat grass by sandwiching it between two other bulkier items. The sandwiching technique means that one item pushes the wheat grass completely against the cutting disc preventing it from escaping in the gap between the cutting disc and food pusher.
To get even more juice yield from wheat grass, soak it for a few minutes. The water will help the shredding blades actually cut and not just smear the wheat grass.
Leafy Greens (Kale)
Like wheat grass, centrifugal juicers do not juice leafy greens like spinach or kale very well. The sandwich technique described in the wheat grass section above will also work with leafy greens. Also some leafy greens like kale can be bunched together in a large ball. Little leaves of spinach do pose a problem, but the sandwich technique works with small leaves. Small leaves can also be wrapped inside a larger leaf like a lettuce leaf. Kale in a bunch still does not yield a lot of juice, but the yield does improve by if the Kale is soaked in water beforehand. Yield can also be improved by juicing a high water content item such as a cucumber immediately afterwards which helps wash through the juice residue.
They Enzyme Debate
There’s a lot of talk online about the fast motion of Centrifugal juicers creating heat and killing live enzymes. This is really not a true problem especially if produce is kept in the refrigerator before it is juiced.
However a true problem is oxidation. More oxidation is introduced in centrifugal juicers – especially powerful ones like the Juice Fountain Plus. Oxidation is the same process that makes an apple turn brown after it’s cut. Once the oxidation is a process starts the nutritional value deteriorates more and more. To overcome this, it is important to drink juice immediately after it is made.
Cleaning is fairly easy with the Juice Fountain Plus. The “Nutri Disc” cutting disc/filter basket is the most important item to keep clean. There are very specific instructions in the owner’s manual about how to keep the Nutri Disc clean. Cleaning the Nutri Disc is not complicated or hard, but it is imporatnt to keep the tiny holes in the filter basket free of clogs. A nylon brush is included to help scrub the Nutri Disc clean.
Pulp can collect under the edge of the juice collector and be easy to miss. It is important to clean the top cover and juice collector well so it seals together without any hiccups.
Pulp is flung violently covering all the internal parts in any centrifugal juicer so it is important to immediately rinse and wash off the pulp before it becomes dry and much harder to clean. Also the dye in vegetables like carrots can easily stain plastic if it is not removed quickly. However, if stains do occur, the owner’s manual does include instructions for how to remove them. I have found that washing with non scratch scotch bright cleaner does the trick.
With the little bit of extra care that the Nutri Disc requires and the fact that the unit does not eject pulp neatly, the Juice Fountain Plus is a little bit more involved than rinsing off a dinner plate, but it is certainly not an overly cumbersome process.
Unlike any other Breville Juice Fountain model the top cover is NOT dishwasher safe. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet concerning which parts are and which are not dishwasher safe. I have confirmed with the manufacturers that what is in the owner’s manual is correct. The top cover and the food pusher are not dishwasher safe. Every other part, including the Nutri Disc cutting disc/filter basket, is dishwasher safe. Washing the top cover in the dishwasher could result in warping causing the juicer to leak.
All dishwasher safe parts should only be placed on the top shelf of the dishwasher.
Attention to Detail
Unquestionably, the Juice Fountain Plus is one of the best centrifgual juicers on the market especially in the all-around category. That is, for a basic model (not a luxury all stainless steel model) the Juice Fountain Plus really can’t be beat in terms of quality. There are a lot of other centrifugal models out there, and some are significantly cheaper. You can pick up a new centrifugal juicer for only $50, but those models will not have the quality or features of the Juice Fountain Plus. Other centrifugal models we have tested do not eject pulp efficiently, may require a special tool to remove the cutting blade, or may not be as powerful.

Usually dimesion is a factor that is overlooked. The actual dimension are 18″ tall x 16″ long x 7″ wide causing many to comment how “huge” this appliance is.
The Juice Fountain Plus’s size caused one person to comment,”
It’s definitely not something you will want to pull out daily, otherwise you won’t end up using it. It needs its own home. It’s an attractive appliance, so it looks nice sitting on the counter and we barely even notice it anymore.”
Pretty smart strategy for those that want to add healthy homemade juice to their daily lifestyle!

There are over 3,000 reviews for the Juice Fountain Plus on Amazon making it one of the most popular juicers on the market. Some of the more notable reviews that may have gotten buried include:
“Replaced my Hamilton Beach Juicer, much happier…”
“Not efficient on green, leafy vegetables but fast fast fast…”
“Yield deteriorated. Better for hard produce…” Note: A deteriorating yield is a sure-fire sign of a clogged filter.
“I’ve had two black Jack Lalanne’s in the past. If I had known how much better a juicer could be, I would have purchased this one instead…”
[notice ] A note about reviews. We at KitchenBlossom can not be of any service at all if we do not provide genuine unbiased information. A considerable amount of research is conducted for each review. To be as helpful as possible, we only consider reviews verified purchases. The payoff for people with a self-interest to game review system is just too high to believe that it doesn’t happen. I do read the “most helpful” reviews online, but mostly I read hundreds of the “most recent” reviews. The problem with the “most helpful” reviews is they get suck at the top by nature of already being at the top and then getting even more votes. Funnily enough many of the “most helpful” reviews that get stuck at the top are not verified purchases! Even if a review is old or outdated it can stay at the top. The “most recent” reviews are more likely to be reviews from real people who have recently purchased the product and given their honest feedback. [/notice]
